Is the Middle East Entering a New Era of Displacement?

Israel's year-long onslaught against Gaza and its invasion of southern Lebanon has created a new refugee wave. More than a million people, including Syrian refugees have been displaced across Lebanon. But, where can they go? The Assad regime is in control throughout much of Syria, Turkiye is already hosting nearly 5 million refugees and Europe is unwilling to absorb another wave.

The UN refugee agency chief Filippo Grandi has warned that the displacement crisis in both Lebanon and Syria could get worse. He said tighter border measures were not the answer, while he described them as ineffective and sometimes unlawful. Grandi also pointed out that more than 120 million people are displaced around the world by conflicts, persecution, poverty and climate change. The number has more than doubled over the past decade.
